One Life, No Price

The UN Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking has produced an exceptional video “One Life, No Price“, which illustrates the scope of human trafficking in India, the root causes and vulnerability of certain groups. Amongst some of the alarming statistics:

  • 1.2 million are trafficked throughout the world each year (UNFPA 2006)
  • 9.5 billion dollars in revenue generated through trafficking annually (US Government estimate 2006)
  • 300-500,000 children in prostitution in India (UNICEF, 2006)

The video also describes training initiatives and successes by Indian authorities to spot trafficking, bring perpetrators to justice, and rehabilitate victims.

The video is powerful. Its only weakness as far as Impactt is concerned is that it focusses on ‘black’ and ‘grey’ market industries in India. Human trafficking in India remains a high concern for women and children for forced labour and sexual exploitation, however, in a country where textile and apparel account for 30% of India’s exports, we need to ensure that the potential for awareness for human trafficking in all sectors, regulated and not, is raised and addressed.
