Background
Before coming to Impactt, Tiger worked in three factories, in the cutting, spray painting and welding departments. At one factory, he was the Worker Activity Centre manager, where he planned social and athletic events for workers. He served as the lead volunteer organizer at another factory, working on a team to organize internal events and services for workers, as well as community outreach activities like neighbourhood cleanups and worker-community social events. Tiger enjoys leading workshops for workers, and continues to hold informal career path workshops for employees at the last factory where he worked before joining Impactt in 2006.
What makes Impactt different?
When I worked in the factories, auditors came all the time. The factories coached me what to say to them about my pay and hours, but the auditors never asked me those questions anyway. I saw them walking through the workshop in the morning, going for lunch at noon, and leaving. We at Impactt are a very different sort of visitor. When I interview workers now, they still ask me why I’m talking to them and why I haven’t left for lunch yet. What makes Impactt different is the importance it attaches to workers’ voices, and its vigorous factory assessments. I see how different we are every time I surprise workers by listening to them, and especially, every time I spend time with the children we’ve taken out of factories and put in school.
