Internal training for Nautica/VF Corporation
Ethical trading workshops for internal commercial teams for US Garment brand
Nautica and VF Sportswear, leading US garment brands, commissioned Impactt to design and deliver internal training for sourcing, QA, licensees and production managers in both New York City and Hong Kong. The interactive half day workshops were designed to highlight:
- the purpose and benefits of the VF Social Compliance programme at all levels (for workers, suppliers and the brand)
- the risks of not responsibly addressing workplace problems
- the best ways to engage suppliers and encourage change
- how social compliance and production departments at Nautica/VF can work together more effectively to provide mutual support and to provide a more informed and focused message to suppliers about social compliance.
Our approach to training involves lively and concise presentations, group work and discussions. We draw on a wealth of real life examples from the kind of factories from which the client buys. Participants were ask what actions they planned to take to improve working conditions at the end of the course, responses included:
- Improve buying practices, including establishing more stable relationships with factories, placing the right products at each factory, improving work flow and production planning, reviewing production capacity and loading, allowing reasonable and sufficient lead times, actively communicating between raw material suppliers and factories to improve quality and delivery
- Explain the benefits of compliance to the factories and to top managers. Share success stories with factory managers
- Work with factories to raise efficiency for products produced, in order to help them reduce costs and address compliance issues
After the New York training, Nautica gave the following feedback:“Impactt has the dynamic combination of having both an in-depth understanding of compliance issues in China and the ability to relate their knowledge and experience to brands. I was particularly impressed with the non-judgmental nature of their work, and openness to different kinds of approaches to compliance.” Allison Kohll, Nautica Social Compliance, VF Sportswear/VF Corporation
Feedback from some of the participants that attended the Hong Kong training included:“[the training session has given me] understanding about the purpose of compliance”"the content [of the training] was very comprehensive and easy to understand”"I hope [this training] can also be delivered at the merchandising level”
